he was here not there when she didn't need him

The wind catches her dress wrapping it close to her voluptuous frame. It’s too cold to be outside in this type of weather, but a little chill never stopped Ally before and right now is a time where warmth isn’t what she’s after, more or less knowing she has a ride home would be far more appreciated.

She raps on the car window, her sister Alex rolls the window down, “We can take you with,” she says with a bit of that chill biting at her voice.

Ally looks into the car, her emerald eyes study Alex, then Alex’s portly boyfriend Richmond. Richmond tips his cigarette out his window and then lets out a puff of smoke. Ally shakes her head, “No its okay, I’ll get a ride back with Landon.” The breeze slips through her hair, forcing her to eat a bit of her brunette locks as the last words slip off of her lips.

“Are you sure?” Alex is nearly begging now.

Ally shakes her head, “I’ll be fine, thanks though.”

Alex whimpers an, “Okay,” and waves goodbye to her sister. Ally turns to face Landon, a smile creeping across her face.

Tall, dark, and handsome could describe Landon, but he’d prefer for you to look at him as a person, at his soul…yeah two years at an art school in upstate New York will do that to you. He hates his name, far too pretensions, but he’s dealt with it. Now, staring into Ally’s eyes his mind begins to wander back to the past, before he left home, when things with Ally and him were a tight rope walk at best.

He was shocked to get a call from her, Ally hated phones about as much as she hated pretensions jerks who ran away to art school in New York. It wasn’t all hate in her heart though, there was love…once.

At a time she though she could love Landon, maybe even tell him that she did. That feeling faded quickly after the prom. After he wasn’t there. After he made her wait three hours without as much as a phone call or message via carrier pigeon. The year and 8 months that followed she ignored his existence.

Tonight was the first time that Ally had a chance to look into his eyes and search for long lost answers. She found nothing familiar…there was something new here, a new person even an honest, forgiving man. The boy from those near torturous high school years, the guy who disappointed her in every aspect of her romantic life was now in front of her. He began to apologize for all of the follies. He noted all the neglect and treated each incident as if they were sins that threatened the existence of life on this planet. “I’m sorry,” he started, but she wasn’t listening…and Landon knew it.

He knew she was trying to stare into his soul. He wasn’t going to try and block her. The only real though outside of this stream of repentance consciousness was if her boyfriend was still a factor. As he finishes his down out plea for forgiveness she begins to smile.

“Landon,” she stops him midsentece.

“Yeah?”

She rubs her arms a bit, “Can we go back inside?”

He nods, “Sure.”

Inside the reception hall the wedding party is dying down. Landon wraps his coat over Ally’s shoulders, “I just—“

“Need to say it,” she finishes, “I know, Landon Marcus the only man who can spill his heart out on the coldest night in May.”

“I aim for originality,” he replies with a smile.

“So when do you want to leave?”

Landon grabs her hand and twists her arm, sending her into a spin. She giggles as he dips her and gets close to her lips, millimeters from her lips, “Whenever you want.”

This is what Landon has always wanted, a shot with the girl who has plagued him since he was 15. His heart gets heavy and god knows that the thumping in his chest is out weighing his brain’s little blinking light. There’s a prayer seeping out. A begging in his heart to see the reasoning, this path is one of devastation.

Ally’s smile gives way to that pleasant little bliss that her heart won’t be given to anyone. It’s only tonight that she ahs to fear. The repercussions can be left behind and as the make their way out on the dance floor she pulls Landon close. He wraps his arms around her. Ally has found safety in these arms before. Tears have been shed on these shoulders, the scent of his clothes has bit at her nostrils before and she liked it, she likes it now. Landon was there the night Mike left, the day she needed a ride home from Corey’s. This flood of emotion brings tears to her eyes. “I need to go to the bathroom.” She pushes off of Landon and scurries off the dance floor.

Landon watches her disappear into the foyer. Like so many times before he doesn’t ask he just stares at her back. He takes a step forward into new territory. He makes his way toward the foyer and catches the bathroom door closing out of the corner of his eye.

He raps in the door.

“One minute,” the reply comes with a soft sniffle.

Landon pushes open the door, Ally turns away from the mirror and glares at Landon. A stream of mascara snakes down her cheek.
